Alveley Petanque Club

The Game - Petanque, commonly known as boules, is played with small steel balls on a dirt, gravel or stony surface. Usually, for matches and competitions it is played on a confined flat surface called a piste. Players can be of any age, but children under 13 must be supervised by an adult.

Club History - There has been an Alveley boules team since the late 1980s, first played on a two lane piste at The Royal Oak, Alveley. The team moved in the late 1990s to play on a new two lane piste at The Red Lion for 10 years, changing its name to “The Red Lion Borderers”. The team then returned to The Royal Oak to yet another new piste that had four playing lanes.

In 2008 the Club had enough players for two teams currently called Alveley Royals and Alveley Oaks.  Due to the closure of the Royal Oak for over a year the Club had to find another home. Grateful thanks to the Alveley Recreation Association who installed a magnificent 6 lane piste on its ground in 2017.  At this time the Club changed its name yet again to Alveley Petanque Club.

Membership & Participation - As at January 2020 there were just 20 full Club Members of which 13 have been playing since 2008 some of whom having played much longer.

The piste is for use by anybody in the local community and boules are available to borrow, click HERE for more details.

The Club is always on the look-out for new members who will be very welcome to join our friendly and happy band of boulers.  Our members are very proud of their piste which has some of the best facilities around.

The Severn Valley Petanque League - The Club has entered teams in the SVPL for over 30 years. A team normally plays with 6 to 8 players in a match. The League season is from April to October. Besides a League of two divisions there are also team and other knock-out competitions. To find out more click HERE go to the SVPL web site

Club Matters - Alveley Petanque Club has a formally written Constitution and holds an AGM every Autumn following the end of the playing season. An Annual Club Dinner is held every March which is always well attended. It runs its own Mixed Doubles Tournament, which is in memory of a former Club Captain, the late Barbara Parkes. This competition is open to all players and partners of teams in the Severn Valley Petanque League (SVPL). Hard working members of the Club maintain the piste enclosure and from time to time introduce improvements in facilities to the benefit of all.

Why Not Join Us - Our Club ambition is to encourage more people whatever their age to play enjoyable games of boules in a friendly and sociable setting. So, if you are interested to find out more please get in touch.
