History

The recreation ground is a major element in the lives of the people of Alveley and District by providing organised sport and leisure. Six acres of immaculately maintained recreation ground for everyone’s enjoyment, with a playground for the young. An attractive pavilion offers changing rooms and shower facilities for sports clubs with the facility of a large function room, kitchen and bar, a facility for hire for private functions. The recreation ground, run by a management committee of dedicated volunteers, plus a group of Trustees with the responsibility to safeguard its future for the benefit of everyone for generations ahead.

The Recreation ground and Pavilion are the focal point of the village of Alveley, the Pavilion with its excellent facilities can be hired for various events by contacting Margaret Shaw on 01746 780459 or by completing the enquiry form on the Contact Us page.

It is thought the idea of the recreation ground was originally suggested by Mr Leslie Pitt. He noted over the years how the football and cricket pitches were never situated at one site for very long. His vision was to see an area where various sports could be played and belong to the people of the village.

Many fund raising events have taken place over the years, carnivals, fun days, scarecrow days, half marathons and the Donkey Derby are just some of the events that have taken place on the recreation ground.

May 2017 will see the 70th anniversary of the first football match played on the recreation ground and the intent is to have a day of celebration where the recreation committee, the football club and the residents of Alveley will all combine to provide a day to remember. If anyone would like to be involved as a member of the committee, help with fund raising / maintenance or have any ideas that could support this facility please do not hesitate to contact Diane Knowles on 01746 780495.
